Find your SPACE of pleasure

Struggling to keep your fingers on the keyboard? Irritated with the demands of writing? Whether you write personal emails, academic papers, or professional reports, it can be easy to forget the joys of putting pen to paper. This gallery aims to help you remember.

While researching her new book, Writing with Pleasure, Helen Sword collected hundreds of “SPACE of Writing” action plans from academic writers across the disciplines and around the world. Distributing paper and coloured pencils to participants at her writing workshops, she invited them to depict their ideal WriteSPACE, a space of pleasurable writing that is:

  • Socially balanced

  • Physically engaging

  • Aesthetically nourishing

  • Creatively challenging

  • Emotionally uplifting

This gallery presents a collection of these colourful SPACE maps. Click on the portals below to travel to outer space and back down to earth; to relive childlike joy in the playground of writing; and to celebrate the bodies we write with and the places where we write.

Flick through and find new ways to make your writing practice more pleasurable. Then, when you’re ready, make your own SPACE map and upload it onto “Your Gallery” to share your writing experience with others. Write your own SPACE.
